Os filmes americanos sobre adolescentes tornaram-se muito populares com o sucesso de vários títulos de John Hughes nos anos 80 (como The Breakfast Club e Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), e mantiveram essa popularidade ao longo da década de 1990 (com um renovado foco no género de terror após o sucesso de Scream, de Wes Craven, em 1996). Quando não eram de terror, a maioria destes filmes adolescentes eram comédias sexuais brejeiras (American Pie, etc.) ou comédias românticas inofensivas (She’s All That, etc.). Mas poucos eram verdadeiramente “nasty” e realistas na forma como retratavam o liceu e a adolescência. Os dois filmes deste ciclo — Ligações Selvagens (“Wild Things”, 1998), de John McNaughton, e Estranhas Ligações (“Cruel Intentions”, 1999), de Roger Kumble — estão muito longe de ser filmes adolescentes típicos da época.

Ligações Selvagens insere-se no subgénero do “thriller erótico”, que também foi muito popular nos anos 80 e 90 (Body Heat, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, Disclosure, The Last Seduction, etc.). Destacou-se pelo seu cenário — um escândalo sexual num liceu da Flórida, onde duas raparigas de 18 anos (Neve Campbell e Denise Richards) acusam o seu orientador escolar (Matt Dillon) de violação. Claro que nada é o que parece, e as reviravoltas são tão engenhosas quanto escandalosas.

Estranhas Ligações é uma excelente actualização do romance Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782), de Choderlos de Laclos, que já tinha sido adaptado por Roger Vadim, Stephen Frears e Milos Forman (a versão de Frears, Dangerous Liaisons, de 1988, continua a ser a adaptação mais aclamada, e com toda a justiça). Transferindo a acção da França do século XVIII para o mundo de adolescentes extremamente ricos e privilegiados da Nova Iorque contemporânea, o filme preserva a mordacidade e o pathos do romance original, sendo emocionalmente muito mais complexo e honesto do que a maioria dos filmes adolescentes daquela — ou de qualquer — época.

São filmes que provavelmente não seriam produzidos hoje por um grande estúdio, dada a sua total indiferença em relação ao politicamente correcto, mas que me levam a pedir: MAKE TEEN MOVIES NASTY AGAIN!

American teen movies became very popular with the success of several John Hughes titles in the 80s (such as "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"), and maintained their popularity throughout the 1990s (with a renewed focus on the horror genre after the success of Wes Craven's "Scream" in 1996). If not horror, most of these teen movies were raunchy sex comedies ("American Pie", etc.) or vanilla romantic comedies ("She's All That," etc.). But very few were actually "nasty" and realistic in their depiction of high school and adolescence. The two movies in this cycle - John McNaughton's "Wild Things" (1998) and Roger Kumble's "Cruel Intentions" (1999) - are far from your standard teen movies from that period.

WILD THINGS is part of the "erotic thriller" subgenre that was also very popular in the 80s and 90s ("Body Heat," "Fatal Attraction," "Basic Instinct," "Disclosure," "The Last Seduction," etc). It stood out for its setting - a sex scandal in a Florida high school, where two 18-year-old girls (Neve Campbell and Denise Richards) accuse their guidance counselor (Matt Dillon) of rape. Of course, nothing is what it seems, and the twists are as clever as they're outrageous.

CRUEL INTENTIONS is a terrific update on Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," which had been adapted by Roger Vadim, Stephen Frears and Milos Forman before (Frears' 1988 "Dangerous Liaisons" remains the most acclaimed adaptation, and deservingly so). Transfering the action from 18th century France to the world of extremely wealthy and privileged teens in contemporary New York City, the film retains the bite and pathos of the source novel, and is much more emotionally complex and honest than most teen movies of that, or any, time.

These are movies that would likely not get made by a major studio today, given their total disregard for political correctness, but they beg me to ask: MAKE TEEN MOVIES NASTY AGAIN!
