SHAPING THE INTERPLANETARY:
THE SOUNDS OF JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON
Screenings

Angles facing upwards, towards the sky, forms in tension, in imbalance – “Last and First Men”, directed and music by Jóhann Jóhannsson, is a visual and sound experience. We are placed before architectural memorials – sometimes from points of view without references – immersed in slow and somber music. Jóhannsson appropriates a collection of places and forms that refer to collective memory and reinterprets them through a voice that speaks about a fiction – cosmic spaces, interplanetary civilizations, millions of years in the future, of which we have as traces their abandoned places: astronomical observatories, launch platforms, spaceships, with tones, textures and frames that are reflected in the sound environment.

It is also Jóhannsson's music that welcomes the aliens filmed by Denis Villeneuve in “The First Encounter” (Arrival), extraterrestrials arriving in a monolithic vertical ship – in contrast to the horizontality that science fiction has accustomed us to.

Adaptation of the novel Story of your Life, by Ted Chiang, Villeneuve and Jóhannsson interpret with images and sounds the contact of a linguist with extraterrestrial writing. A circular writing that gives the person who writes it the ability to think in any direction of time – and realize that causes and consequences can be interchangeable.

Curatorship by Sérgio Pereira.

Shot on black and white Super 8 film, 'End of Summer' is a slow-paced, hypnotic journey through the stark landscapes of South Georgia Island and the Antarctic Peninsula. Shot as a series of almost still frames over a 20-day period during the last days of the Antarctic summer, the film is a startling look at life at the end of the world.

Two billion years ahead of us, a future human race finds itself on the verge of extinction. Almost all that remains in the world are lonely, surreal monuments, conveying their message to the desert.
