GOLDEN HEART TRILOGY | LARS VON TRIER
Screenings
Our second film cycle takes a profound and challenging approach, delving into the early works of Lars Von Trier. We will immerse ourselves in the unique vision of this filmmaker through his first three films, collectively known as the "Trilogy of the Golden Heart": "BREAKING THE WAVES" (1996), "THE IDIOTS" (1998), and "DANCER IN THE DARK" (2000).
Lars von Trier, renowned for his provocative and visceral approach, weaves narratives that defy conventions and explore the complexities of the human condition. In "BREAKING THE WAVES," we are immersed in a tale of devotion and sacrifice, marked by Emily Watson's extraordinary performance. The film highlights Von Trier's ability to delve into emotionally intense themes with brutal sincerity.
In "THE IDIOTS," the director embraces the Dogma 95 movement, challenging cinematic norms by creating a narrative that oscillates between provocation and reflection. Von Trier examines the notion of normalcy in a society that often rejects the different. The audacity of his approach is reflected in the choice to bring the complexities of human nature to the screen.
"DANCER IN THE DARK" signifies Von Trier's collaboration with the iconic singer Björk. The film is a sensory experience, addressing themes of injustice and sacrifice, with Björk delivering a memorable performance. The fusion of music and visual narrative highlights Von Trier's mastery in storytelling through innovative means.
The trilogy's name derives from the narratives involving three naive heroines who maintain their "golden hearts" despite the tragedies they endure. While all three films are at times associated with the Dogma 95 movement, "THE IDIOTS" was the only one to meet all the necessary criteria for certification under this manifesto, becoming Dogma 95 II, the second film adhering to these rules.
Lars von Trier, a passionate filmmaker, plunges into the depths of cinema and the human condition. His transcendent and universal stories challenge the audience to reflect on existential and social issues. This cycle, meticulously curated by PROSA, continues the tradition of compelling and incisive film cycles. As always, after the screenings, we invite everyone to participate in post-screening discussions, where we will delve into factual analyses, trivia, psychological insights, and narratological discussions, further enriching the cinematic experience.
