ABOUT FREEDOM: 2 FILMS BY SEBÁSTIAN LELIO
Screenings
We are excited but also cautious about the 50th anniversary of April 25th and the "next day" after the March 10th elections. As cinema is an art that propels reflection in both senses of the word, this time we evoke more of the specular sense, allowing ourselves to be taken to Chile (on the other side of the mirror) and its arduous struggle and sacrifice for freedom.
This cycle highlights two powerful works from the renowned Chilean filmmaker, exploring the search for individual freedom amidst oppressive systems and discriminatory social structures. "A Fantastic Woman" (2017) and "The Wonder" (2022) are films that offer a unique cinematic experience while prompting reflection on the ongoing struggle for freedom and human dignity.
Inspired by the Chilean reality since the days of Pinochet's military coup and probably by all the repercussions of extremism, populism, and destructive nationalism around the world, Sebastián Lelio imprints in his films the essence of this struggle and its marks on contemporary society.
Our goal with this cycle is not only to contemplate and analyze these films, but also to provoke personal reflection on issues of freedom, justice, and truth. In a world where disinformation often obscures the true fight for freedom, it is essential to resist and seek the truth.
For as many years as necessary.
