POSSIBLE WORLDS: EARTH
Cinema Screenings
In POSSIBLE WORLDS: EARTH, we invite you to immerse yourself in two cinematic works that explore the fascinating and provocative idea of being present, whether physically or mentally, on another planet that mirrors our own Earth. The featured films are "ANOTHER EARTH" (2011), directed by American filmmaker Mike Cahill, and "HARD TO BE A GOD" (2013), by Russian director Aleksey German.
"Another Earth" takes us on an introspective and melancholic journey where a second Earth appears in the sky, offering the promise of a new beginning. The protagonist, Rhoda, sees in this replica of our planet the possibility of atoning for her past mistakes. This narrative forces us to reflect on the idea of redemption and the utopia of a fresh start. Is it really possible to undo the mistakes we have made? Or would the human essence bring with it the same dilemmas and tragedies, even in a new world?
On the other hand, "Hard to Be a God" presents us with a brutal and visceral perspective. German's film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the Strugatsky brothers, depicting Earth scientists sent to a planet where civilization is stuck in a medieval state. Here, the attempt to intervene and improve this "other" world proves to be as complex as it is frustrating. This work raises questions about the ethics of intervention and the difficulty of imposing external changes on a society.
Despite their distinct approaches, both films converge on a common theme: the possibility of reevaluating and rethinking our actions through the lens of another planet. This idea has been a constant in science fiction, from Tarkovsky's "Solaris" to Nolan's "Interstellar," where space and other worlds serve as mirrors for our deepest hopes and anxieties.
Through this cycle, we aim to foster a philosophical discussion about the human capacity for redemption and transformation. Is the answer to our mistakes truly in a new beginning on another planet? Or do we need to find salvation within ourselves, here and now, by directly confronting the consequences of our actions?
We invite everyone to join us in this deep and stimulating reflection, where cinema serves as a window to new possibilities and challenges us to think about human nature and our place in the universe. Together, let's explore these possible worlds and question whether true change lies in starting anew or in accepting and improving what we already have.
